It’s just occured to me that the SCA is just TOO much of everything that I would like to do… My interests vary widely and well, I think I get spread far too thin. How can I choose between Book Heraldry, Archery, Pewter casting, Silver Jewellery making, Combat Archery, Tent making, Garb making, Heavy Fighting (Which I really need to get done before festival), Coining, as well as all the research I need to do? Not to mention all the mundane requirements in my life… Ahhh what a mess. Oh, and don’t forget the webpage…
Priorities! I heard you all exclaim! But… How do I choose what’s more improtant to me? Festival is 2 weeks away… And there’s a hell of alot of stuff that I need to get prepared… Concentrating on one thing would be sensible, but then all the others suffer… Certain aspects could be farmed out I guess, but then that defeats the purpose of being interested in them in the first place.
Ahhh… Good thing I am really easy going, and while being mildly concerned (enough to ask here for advice obviously), I’m also happy to just muddle along as time permits.
I ran into an old acquaintance, The God Emperor Schumann, on the bus yesterday. He used to be an old metal-weaponer, playing in one of the non-SCAdian reenactment groups here in Canberra. But he grew out of it, he said, and left.
That’s the difference between the SCA and every similar group. Since I joined fifteen years ago, I’ve been a feast steward, patriarch of a household, a voice herald, a book herald, a singer, a poet, a song writer, a compiler of songbooks, a web page designer, a hospitaller, a recruiter for the next generation of Earls Marshall and Queens-by-right-of-arms, and an online curmudgeon. There’s space for all of that and more. Note how I’ve done nothing involving combat, cooking or costuming, the traditional three “C”s of the SCA. And yet I’ve remained busy.
There’s your solution: do everything, but not all at once. You have decades ahead of you. Pick a couple of things you like and do them now. When they get dull, pick a few more. Don’t rush into everything at once. It will always be two weeks until Festival.
Yeah! What he said!
Why don’t you make a list for each thing you want to do and on each list, jot down the points/ goeals of what you want to get done with how long it would tke to do each (or what you need etc)
Then you have to be harsh and realistic about what you can reasonably complete by a due date.
you may also need to time manage your days (something I try at but continue to fail at). Give yourself a to do list every day or week then you can start ticking things off. Katje uses her LJ as a dto do list quite frequently.
