It's actually just a web development course that concentrates on Dreamweaver and Fireworks and is mainly about the process involved in developing a website rather than the coding. At the moment my coding is a little sub standard... I tend to work well with modifying existing code, but have no idea about starting new programming projects.

Sounds like a great goal! Well done!

and I totally understand about AUStudy - so not enough.

So, what are you going to learn on the diploma course?

Can I also suggest (for maximum employability when you get to the end of your diploma) you look into mucking about with open source while you're still studying? It's always a good thing to have a project you can point a potential employer at and say "and here's an example of the code I've done... and how I've been gifting my time to the world".

I found my double Diploma of Information Technology at TAFE to be enjoyable but quite intense. I think it was more harsh than usual as it was a two year course that had been jammed into eighteen months and had a CISCO CCNA certification thrown in on top. The people running the course were counting on a very high attrition rate, and worked us without remit or compassion to make sure they got it. But that course was unusual. Only a handful of people actually competed everything in the double diploma because they had culled us back to the clever few just as a local employer came in waving stupid amounts of money at people with any sort of networking clue who would go and work for him.

The people in my course were generally good and the topics we covered were diverse. Some of the material is bound to make you roll your eyes with boredom and other parts you will have to work on to learn while wondering what possible use or relevance they are. But some of the stuff you get to play with at TAFE is pretty cool (and I'm not just talking about your classmates).

I have long held the opinion that it sucks goats that Austudy is less than Newstart. What genius decided that, as we have a skills shortage in Australia, there should be disincentives for people to study?

Anyway, good on you for studying. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you don't end up so destitute that you have to drop out before completion.
