My laptop computer is Kubuntu, and while it was initially installed to force me to use Linux, and learn about it, I always thought I would head back to Windows after a couple of months… I have had Linux on it now for about 6-7 months… and quite enjoy it.
Though having Linux on my laptop doesn’t exactly mean that helping out with the Canon database is easy… means I have to use my Windows machine at home… Though… I have recently decided to give Wine a go… it’s a Windows Emulation layer, that allows small basic Windows programs to work within Linux. Initial tests with Gratian 0.7 seem to be promising. Now to actually add in all the correct details and see how far we can get…
More posts later as developments develop.
It’s working, eh? Even with Apache 2, which I presume is the default on Ubuntu? I’ll try it on Manticore as well some time. It’s just a pity I can’t run Delphi under Ubuntu, since it’s the only app I use that wasn’t originally a Unix product: I’m an Emacs man most of the time, and I develop in PHP and MySQL — not because I want to, but because is leery of installing less idiot-proof languages on his boxen, given the quality of idiot he gets to deal with. So a shift to Ubuntu wouldn’t be all that painful, once I learn to stop double-clicking on the top left widget to close a window…
But it’s a pipe dream. There’s nothing to compare with Delphi for efficient production of applications. .NET is pitiful, Eclipse is ridiculous and I’m not interested in kids’ languages like Basic and Java, so I’m stuck with Windows. Hey ho; could be worse: could be stuck with MacOS, and then I’d have to gouge my eyes out with a spoon.
Oh, and beware: there’s a bit of test code in the upload function that creates a temp file on C:\. I forgot to take it out. Will it fail under WINE?
Hmmm eye’s… spoon… Not a pretty sight.
Yes, it’s kinda working, just not willing to try entering all the settings from memory just yet, I’ll try that in 20 minutes or so. When I’m home and have the data in front of me.
From what I understand, Delphi is just a programming environment is it not? Allowing you to use your source and compile to numerous platforms? Or am I just showing my complete lack of programming knowledge? ;)
Hmmm… We will see… theoretically it shouldn’t… though theory and reality rarely co-exist in the same time-space continuum.
