So, it’s been a whole month since I have spent a few minutes updating you my friends on the goings on in my life. Has much really happened in that time? Indeed it has…
Radburne war was a raging success, people turned up from as far away as Bosenburg to enjoy a weekend of fun and drinking and War. I made up Tokens for the War so that those who were there have something to trigger some great memories, and as a result I was fed the whole weekend by the lovely Lady Johanna van Enschede and her household. Whilst the mood to fight has leaked from my bones, I certainly enjoyed the weekend, and will being taking a keen interest in the next Radburne War. This newly forming shire have greatness in them, and I believe that they will grow into something great.
On returning from Radburne, I had come to a conclusion that has been a few months coming. House Drakkar, whilst being a great household for getting me on the field as a light, and training, and encouraging other aspects were in other ways not really the kind of Household that suited me. My interest in the SCA has expanded beyond what they could offer, and Drakkar being the single minded killing machine that they are were in some ways limiting me. After making a pact with Skip-herra Ulric to remain an friend and ally, I have now set out on my own to better experience ALL that Lochac can offer.
My new hobby seems to be picking up interest throughout Rowany, about 2 weeks ago I was approached by Baroness Finn, and asked if I would make her a coronet for Rowany 25. With Katje’s coronet being such a success for the Mid-winter Coronation, I guess it was only time for others to see the potential. Finns Coronet is constructed differantly from Katje’s, As Katjes is simply 6 moulded segments that have been welded together and finished, where as Finn’s has 10 pieces to form the generic band, and then the six “points” have been moulded and welded into place. The amount of finishing work has been increased to allow a more generic construction technique, however there were certain aspects of the finishing that I may have to change in future constructions to save on finishing work, and allow me to spend more time on the final finishing as oposed to hand detailing. The roping on the top and bottom of Finn’s coronet was done by hand with a file, and was time consuming and monotonous work. I’m quite proud of the final product, and it will be a pleasure to see her wearing it on Saturday night at the feast.
During the construction of Finn’s coronet, I was concidering my options for future projects, and deciding whether I really wished to open up my services to the whole of Lochac. The two coronets I have done are hardly a massive body of work that allow me to charge a fortune, and expect people to be happy with a piece that cost 20 times the value of tin thats in it, however they were a fair amount of work, and both of them were completed in a 2 week turn around so that their respective owners could wear them at a specific event. If I was going to do this a little more professionally, I would be asking that orders be placed 6 weeks before delivery. Taking into account the hours that are invested, and the hours that I would like to invest, A basic coronet like Finn’s will cost around the 120 Gold mark. I’m open to discussing future project under those stipulations, however I would like to see or hear what you have in mind if you are thinking of ordering. I don’t want to commit to something that is beyond my capabilities, though I am willing to push the boundries and be challenged.
